Continuing Education
Nepal Library Association conducts refreshment trainings, trainings on new topics, trainings on capacity building on various thematic issues; it also promotes its members to participate national/international symposiums.
Digital Library Training:
NLA conducts various trainings for the library professionals. Trainings on D-Space Digital Library, Greenstone Digital Library, KOHA Integrated Library Management System, WINISIS, e-library, Open Source Journals, Open Course Ware are conducted.
NLA provides short term orientation and motivational courses to the interested persons, agencies who want to develop their skill, knowledge in library, information and knowledge operation and management. It is wise idea for the executives, managers, principals, advocates, policy makers, teachers, researchers and students to take this course.
LIS III Level
NLA conducts library and information resource center management 3rd level training. NLA provides career counseling for internships and jobs for the Nepali and foreign persons, LIS professionals and interested ones.
Scope of librarians
Librarians are knowledge managers. The job of librarian is highly prestigious in Nepal as the personnel is responsible of providing state of art service, information and documentation service using cutting edge technology. Librarian’s scope of work is everywhere. The most demanding agencies for librarians are schools, colleges, universities, private companies, industries, NGOs, INGOs, research and development institutes, think-tank agencies, corporations, Government bodies and departments, local government agencies, Hospitals, Touristic places, hospitals, Museums, Media (Radio,TV, Print publication-newspaper houses) recreation centers, Software companies, web spaces, clubs (child/youth/women/sport etc.), army, community, information centers, multimedia centers, private home, private secretariat of the policy makers and business persons etc.
Duties of a librarian
Generally a librarian is expected / charged to perform the following duties, but not all at once and not limited to them also.
- Welcome and accept library patrons;
- Analyze patrons' needs and provide the information / material they seek and need;
- Show users how to efficiently search for information on the library, information and knowledge space as well as on the Internet and in other resource centers;
- Select and purchase materials and prepare those materials by classifying them according to subject matter;
- Supervise assistants who prepare cards, computer records, or other access tools that direct users to resources;
- Collect and organize information resources such as books, pamphlets, DVDs, databases, manuscripts, and other materials in a specific field, such as rare books, genealogy, or music;
- Coordinate with external agencies, parent institutions etc.
- Conduct programs such as storytelling for children, and literacy skills and book talks for adults and research assistance-ship for researchers;
- Conduct classes;
- Publicize services;
- Prepare proposals and reports for future plans, grants, services, cooperation etc.
Required qualification of a librarian
To be a librarian Master in Library and Information Science (MLIS) and for assistant librarian Bachelor in Library (and Information) Science (BLIS) accredited by Nepal Library Association is highly recommended. To date Nepal Library Association has recognized the BLIS & MLIS of Tribhuvan University, +2 of Higher Secondary Education Board < http://www.hseb.edu.np/content/curriculum.php > and LIS Level III (35 days) Training given according to the curriculum passed by CTEVT (Council for Technical Education & Vocational Training) For library assistant one should pass 12 class majoring Library (and Information) Science or 12 class passed in any subject with minimum III level Library and Information Resource Center Management Training accredited by Nepal Library Association. One having valid membership of NLA is an added advantage since NLA conducts various refreshment courses, trainings, workshops for the librarians to keep them updated and skilled in new tools and technology of the information / knowledge control and operation.
Salary Scale
In Nepal a librarian gets salary up to NPR 1,440,000 per annum. The assistant librarian get salary up to NPR 820,000 per annum and the library assistant get NPR 360,000 per annum. The salary for the librarians of the government offices is as determined by the pay scale and / or pay commission of the Nepal government. The private and corporate agencies are also requested not to pay less than a government pays for the same level, position, qualifications and duties in order to ripe maximum output from their library personnel and for longevity of the librarian in the institution.
